Operating Authority
Interstate
Get Authorization to Operate as a For-Hire Carrier crossing the State Lines.
If you are going to be transporting crossing state lines in a Vehicle with GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) or GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating) over 10,001lbs. and as a For-Hire (being compensated) carrier, then you will need to obtain a Motor Carrier Number (MC#) (ICC former name). This requirement applies to trucking companies that transport cargo, moving companies that transport household goods, and limo or bus companies that transport passengers as For-Hire (for a fee).
When your application is submitted to FMCSA for Operating Authority your MC Number is issued right away and available on FMCSA SAFER within 24-48 hours. However, your MC Number will be automatically put on a 20–21-day probation period like the old ICC days. During the probation you will need to submit the necessary required Insurance along with the Form BOC-3 to meet compliance with FMCSA. Once your company has met compliance with FMCSA and your probation period is over your MC Number will go Active on either the 20th or 21st day. If you fail to meet FMCSA Compliance, then your OP-1 Application for Interstate Authority will remain on hold until FMCSA Compliance is met. If you don’t meet FMCSA Compliance within 60 days, your OP-1 Application will be dismissed by FMCSA and if you will need to start all over again to get a MC Number.

Need To File Application For
US Dot Number
If you plan to operate a vehicle of 10,000lbs or more with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW – total single weight of truck) or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR- total combination weight of truck, trailer, and load) then depending on your Base States definition of a Commercial Vehicle or if you are crossing the State Lines you may need a U S DOT Number. If you are a Passenger Carrier and your vehicle will be used to transport 16 or more passengers, you are required to obtain a U S DOT Number. If you are a For-Hire (being compensated) passenger carrier and your vehicle will be transporting 9 or more passengers, you will be required to have a U S DOT Number.
Being that the U S DOT Number is required based on your total weight (carriers transporting goods/freight) or the number of passengers you will be transporting (passenger carriers – limo service, bus company, passenger vans, etc.) it doesn’t matter if you are a private carrier or for-hire carrier, if you are being compensated and meet the Commercial Motor Vehicle definition then the U S Department of Transportation requires that you obtain U S DOT Number. Depending on your classification, it is very easy to mark the wrong selection on the application for a U S DOT Number that is incorrect or that does not apply to you and that will end up costing you more money than is needed.
US DOT Number Application Filing Fee(s)
Bicehouse Consulting & Services can file your application for the U.S. DOT Number and have your U.S. DOT immediately. Activation of the U.S. DOT Number will be within 24hrs. The Fee for this service is listed below:
